2018 Sheraton Fiji Villa Teams Challenge

18 – 25 August 2018

Aussie Team ‘Who Cares’ storms home from 4th place to win

In a very close finish to the 2018 Sheraton Fiji Villa Teams Challenge, Team ‘Who Cares’ from Sydney Australia posted a final round score of 221 points to leapfrog the top three teams to take out the title. Team ‘Who Cares’ after Round 3 were 18 points behind leaders Team ‘Coalition’ who had the lead for most of the tournament. It took 4 good final rounds on the last day from each of the team members – Brian & Margaret Naylor from Cromer GC paired with Suzanne & Colin McLean from Manly GC to post a winning score of 855 points. Special note was Brian Naylor’s personal best score of 61 points which steered the team to victory.

The Sheraton Fiji Villa Teams Golf Challenge combines the points of all four team members over four rounds, in a modified ‘stableford’ scoring system that adjusts handicaps after each round.

‘Who Cares’ opening round of 208 points put them in sixth place. After their second round of 218 points, they consolidated their position in sixth. Their third round of 208 points saw the team climb to fourth place in a close battle with the rest of the field during Round 3 which is well known as ‘moving day’. It was, however, their fourth and final round of 221 points, their best score which saw them catapult the field to take line honours.

Joint runners-up on 850 points were first timers to the Villa Challenge, Team ‘Timaru Tigers’ from Timaru (New Zealand). The team was made up of Masters representative, Barbara O’Connell (Pleasant Point), Deb Lovett & Steve Pilcher (Gleniti) and Stephen Ballantyne (St Andrews). Joining them were ‘Guns & Roses’ made up of regulars Nigel Fannin & Rose O’Brien (Ngunguru) newly paired with Wade & Helen Hunkin (Te Puke).

‘Guns & Roses’ were consistent performers during all 4 rounds of the tournament and were regularly placed in the top 3 each day. The ‘Timaru Tigers’ made their move on the last day to come from fifth to tie second.

Notable scores during the week were 227 from Team Coalition during Round 1, 225 points from Team ‘Tauwai’ and 226 from ‘Guns & Roses during Round 2.

The best placed Fiji local team were ‘Full of Joy’ made up of Denarau members – Joy Leslie, Tiri Naylor, John Kemp and Terry Watson. The team were handily placed in the top 3 all week but faded to fifth and posted a final score of 842 points.

The winners were announced at a ’Roman Holiday Italian’ themed final awards ceremony held at the Sheraton Fiji Hotel on Denarau last night.

The Sheraton Villa Teams Challenge ran back to back with The Sheraton Fiji Denarau Women’s Golf Classic held last week at the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club.   Both tournaments were promoted by PaR nz Golfing Holidays with just under 200 players, friends and supporters brought to the Denarau Island.
